Zandvoort specialities

Zandvoort offers a variety of specialities to eat and drink.

Dune potatoes

On your walk through Zandvoort, you pass a house with an orange-coloured beetle with an open lid standing on the path. This is Bram Molenaar’s ‘beeper beetle’, from which he sells a Zandvoort speciality: real biodynamic dune potatoes. The cultivation of dune peepers is a centuries-old tradition in Zandvoort. The salty sea air and the special minerals in the dune sand provide a special flavour. And you can taste it! In addition to Bram’s, the Thalassa beach pavilion also regularly has dune potatoes on the menu. Weather permitting, on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm.

Eat a slice of Emma cake

A tip especially for those with a sweet tooth: the Zandvoortse Plak! A biscuit that will have you licking your fingers. The Zandvoortse Plak, which is actually called “Emma Plak”, was invented in the 1950s by a baker from Zandvoort in honour of the former Queen Emma. The cake roll with strawberry filling is topped with fresh whipped cream, slivered almonds and a piece of peach. With a chocolate topping as a cherry on top, of course. You can try the pastry at Patisserie Chocolaterie Zandvoort, Haltestraat 14. Have fun!

Honey from the bee garden

In the Zandvoortselaan, near the entrance to the Amsterdam water dunes, you will find the bee garden. Here, beekeeper Victor Bol sells delicious organic honey from Zandvoort bees. He makes the honey himself, as the beehives are located behind his house in his garden in the dunes. Victor can tell you all about it with enthusiasm. He knows a lot about what grows and flowers in the dunes of Zandvoort and does everything he can to help the bee population in Zandvoort grow. When the weather is nice, his home shop at Zandvoortselaan 142 is open.

Zandvoort 'Zandkorrels'

The Zandvoort ‘Zandkorrels’ (‘sand grains’): a delicious sweet that is available in 2 flavours. The first variant of this speciality is the original, which consists of chocolate, haddock brine liqueur and sugar. The second variant contains a little ammonia instead of liqueur. The addition of liqueur/salmiac gives it a salty flavour that is appropriate for the sea. Delicious! Zandkorrel is a sweet with a history. In the days when Zandvoort was still a fishing village, the fishermen were given a haddock schnapps to keep them warm. This schnapps is a brandy flavoured with many different spices. These flavours are incorporated into the sweet.
