From September 19, 2026, to April 4, 2027, the Zandvoortse Vrouwen exhibition will be on display at the Zandvoorts Museum. The exhibition brings the stories of women who helped shape Zandvoort throughout the centuries back into the spotlight.
The focus is on, among others, the Zandvoort fisherwomen and fishmongers. They bought fish on the beach and walked with heavy baskets to Haarlem to sell the catch. Paintings, photographs, postcards, and videos provide a glimpse into their lives and important role within the family.
The painting Zandvoortse vrouw from 1884 by Thérèse Schwartze is also on display. In addition, the portrait series ‘Bijvangst’ by photographer Ursula van de Bunte connects the past with the present, featuring portraits and personal stories of contemporary women from Zandvoort.
