Fisherman
The sculpture ‘the fisherman’ is one of the five statues that were unveiled in 1964 by mayor van Fenema. It was actually a family party because the husband of the artist Nijland was Wilfried Put. His statue ‘the washerwoman’ is a little further on in the park of the Leeuwerikenstraat. These statues embellish the southern part of Zandvoort, which is also called the bird neighbourhood. The other new neighbourhoods are not so richly endowed with beautiful works of art. For that, you have to go more towards Zandvoort Noord, where several statues have been placed in various parks. The object ‘the fisherman’ is very appropriately located near the Swan Lake, where large carp swim. Many a fisherman will be jealous of the boy who shows his big catch from the concrete pedestal.
Christina Put – Nijland
The artist couple Put lived in Amsterdam around 1964 and Christina also received fl. 6000,= from the municipality of Zandvoort for her beautiful statue. The amount came from the beautification fund that was supplemented by good donors and sponsors. The ‘fisherman’ is sturdy and powerful and is also beautiful in its simplicity. Here too, the name of the artist is neatly mentioned on the pedestal. Furthermore, the sculpture is a gem that the residents can certainly be proud of. Christina Put –Nijland was a sculptor-medalist and, like her husband Wilfried, was involved in medal art.
