The bronze statue “Mother and child” (1964), made by the famous Dutch sculptor Charlotte Dorothée Baroness van Pallandt, stands in the park on the AJ van der Moolenstraat in Zandvoort. The statue is 1.70 meters high (including the pedestal) and is part of a series of five statues that were unveiled in 1964 by mayor van Fenema, as part of an artistic beautification of the village. The costs for the statue were covered by the fund for artistic beautification of village statues, but the identity of the sponsors remained secret for a long time. The price of the statue has also not been made public.
“Mother and Child” is a special work that deviates from the figurative art style that the municipality originally requested. The sculpture is more abstract, but still clearly recognizable by the stylized forms of the mother and child. The sculpture can be admired from all sides, which makes it ideal for its location in the public park. Unfortunately, the beauty of the sculpture is sometimes overshadowed by moss growth that forms around the sculpture.
About Charlotte Dorothée Baroness van Pallandt
Charlotte van Pallandt (1898-1997) is considered one of the most influential Dutch sculptors of the 20th century. She began her artistic career as a painter, but switched to sculpture in 1929. Van Pallandt created many monumental sculptures, including the famous statue of King Wilhelmina, which can be found in stone in Rotterdam and in bronze in The Hague. In addition to her own work, she also taught Princess Beatrix, among others, which increased her influence on the Dutch art world. Her work has an abstract approach to the human figure and remains an important contribution to Dutch sculpture.
