Madame Migraine, 1998

Sculpture “Madame Migraine” on the Church Square.

The bronze statue Madame Migraine, made by the Amsterdam artist René Rikkelman, can be found on the Kerkplein in Zandvoort. The statue, with a height of 1.60 meters (including pedestal), symbolizes the complexity of pain and suffering, depicted in the form of a female figure. Despite the title, the statue radiates zest for life, with a swinging hat, a smile and a glass and bottle of wine in her hands. This contrast makes the statue visually intriguing and fitting in with the atmosphere of the Kerkplein.

History and Placement

The idea to place a statue at this location arose after the felling of a diseased tree on the Kerkplein. The statue was moved a little further forward and eventually found its place on the granite pedestal, which was donated by the city council on 27 January 1998. The donation was made during the reopening of the Kerkplein and Kerkstraat.

About René Rikkelman

René Rikkelman is a versatile artist who works both two-dimensionally (painting) and three-dimensionally. He specializes in bronze, soapstone and marble, and often makes figurative sculptures, especially nudes. He likes to work with clay or wax to model his sculptures to scale before they are cast in bronze. Rikkelman makes his bronze sculptures in his own foundry and has a clear preference for realism in his work.
