Een gezin, 1967

A Family (1967) by Hans Bayens on the Town Hall Square.

In the middle of the Raadhuisplein in Zandvoort stands the bronze artwork Een Gezin by sculptor Hans Bayens. The 2.5 meter high statue shows a recognizable scene: a mother scolding her child while it tries to run away. An everyday moment, captured in bronze, that fits perfectly with the lively atmosphere of the village center.

In 1967, the statue was placed without ceremony on the site of the former post office, in consultation with architect Linssen. During the redevelopment of the Raadhuisplein in 2006, the family was given a new position, more towards the centre of the square, with their backs to the square.

About the artist

Hans Bayens (1924-2003) was a Dutch painter, draftsman and sculptor. After studying at the Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp and a creative year in Paris, he settled in Amsterdam. Bayens was known for his impressionistic style and portrayed famous Dutch people such as Willem Drees Sr., Ricardo Chailly and Wim Kan. His sculptures of influential Dutch writers can also be admired in Amsterdam.

A Family is not only a work of art, but also a piece of Zandvoort history that gives character to the Town Hall Square.
