This year’s Jazz in Zandvoort concert series features singer and trumpeter Michael Varekamp, performing a special tribute to jazz legend Louis Armstrong. A concert centered around a love of classic jazz.
Love for jazz
Michael Varekamp started playing the trumpet at the age of ten. His passion for jazz received a decisive boost when he discovered a Louis Armstrong album in his father’s record collection at age twelve. From that moment on, his direction was clear.
International career
After graduating with honors from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in 1997, Varekamp toured with renowned bands such as Fra Fra Sounds and The Dutch Swing College Band. He played in Australia, South Africa, Cuba, and throughout Europe.
After a few years, he decided to focus on his own projects. With productions like Miles! and Louis!, he achieved considerable success and acclaim. In 2001, he was awarded the Kobe Jazz Award at the Breda Jazz Festival.
